Training Kung Fu San Soo

To Spar or Not to Spar?

Students of other arts point to San Soo's lack of sparring as a weak spot. In truth, the brutally direct and effective principles of San Soo make it impossible to use as a game or "play fighting" without crippling or killing competitors.

San Soo philosophy is simple: You will fight as you train. Arts obsessed with trophies and competitions to prove who is best are playing games with one another. To train this way, following rules and play fighting so as not to hurt each other, will make you fight this way on the street.

Fighting is a brutal, ugly business without rules, points, or trophies. Short of destroying human beings for practice, no other system trains the mind to use the body as effectively as San Soo.

Technique Practice

The core of San Soo is the teaching of "techniques", or lessons, and the practice of these lessons on other students in a controlled environment.

The elements of work-out are Technique and Reaction: One student attacks with a specified hold, kick, strike or weapon. His partner responds with a pattern of strikes, nerve attacks, and take-downs, to which the attacker "reacts" as if each strike were real. As one partner learns to fight, the attacker learns how each move feels and how a real opponent will react.

Techniques are designed as a base for learning movement, power, balance, precision, flow and focus. When you fight, you should not follow these set patterns, but apply principles you have learned to suit the situation. The more techniques you learn, the more options you have when confronted.
